IP-based security has a number of similar characteristics to traditional CCTV systems. Succesful implementation requires interaction between security department principles and IT department management as the technologies merge and compliment one another.

It is an important part of the planning and implementation process to know how "smart" a given camera needs to be, and how much of the "intelligence" function is required before a human operator is alerted.

IP based solutions allow for cameras to be easily moved, added, or changed. The system is therefore far more tolerant to future requirements and adjustments than currently implemented CCTV solutions.
